I have a distributor I pulled off a parts jeep and other than the cap having some little pieces broken off around the mounting holes appears to all be there. What would the value of this distributor be? There is a guy locally who wants to trade me a complete set of the military data plates for the dash plus an extra serial number data plate. What do you think?

The best place for you to establish a value for what sounds like a core only distributor is to contact a vendor that sells rebuilt distributors and ask what his core charge is.

For example: https://www.willysjeepparts.com/Distributor_Assemblies.htm

The hard part is establishing the value of the data plate set that includes serial plates. Some states these are illegal to sell with or without titles. A primary part of this value is the level of desperation of the person in need of the serial plate.

Thanks for your input Wes. I am in need of a serial number plate and have been unable to locate one in my six months of searching so I am just going to make the swap.

Tread carefully if you intend to use this new serial plate to title your jeep.

Keep in mind that there are two serial plates for each M38. One on the dash and one on the right rear wheel house. If two different folks try to title two different M38's with the single serial plate they have the DMV computer will throw up a red flag when the second attempt to title is made. I have a friend that had this happen and his paperwork was impounded for several months while the DMV sorted it out.

I think I get what you are saying Wes. Unless I have both plates someone could have titled their jeep if by just having either of them. Did not think of that I guess I will find out when I go to the DMV.

Also keep in mind not all state DMVs use the data plate number to register antique vehicles. In Kansas they use the serial number of the engine.
