Did they restamp the F 134 engine blocks behind the water pump after a engine rebuild with the MD engine # ? Can I assume that if the engine # starting with MD is still visible that the engine block has not been remachined for flatness? If the numbers have been machined off is there any way of telling how much material is missing off the surface, there must be a maximum tolerance that the head and block can be remachined to reach flatness.

I will guess that some did. However I would also guess that most did not.

Military depots used an overhaul plate fastened to the left side of the block.

NO

NO

One would need the block's blueprint to locate that information. I would assume that machine shop common sense usually dictated material removal limits. Once material removal has a negative effect on parts fitment you have a throw away block or head.

I have never seen a restamped one; the original markings were left on and sometimes a tag was applied by the Depot doing the rebuild. That is from about 6 that I have seen and owned.
No reason to change the markings as they don't match anything anyway.

Why would the engine serial number be removed?

Often times the block deck must be trued up flat by machining a wee bit from the deck. Please note where the serial number is stamped!
