In a concerted effort to better organize our data bases I would like to ask that every owner help a bit here. I need the following data on your jeep and detailed photos of the serial dash plate and the patent plate on the wheel house if available. You can email me at tomatotruck993@yahoo.com. Please include your name and email address.

M38A1 Serials

Chassis SN____DOD_____ Contract #_____ Orig Hood#_____Eng SN_____

M38A1 CDN, CDN 2, CDN 3 serials

Wes,
I have not yet been authorized to download the data input forms from Yahoo. Pending that, here is the info on my M38-A1.
N.B. - Underlined characters are best guesstimates.
I'll bet that you can fill in the blanks.
CHASSIS/SERIAL NO. (From dash and Patent plates): 26784;
HOOD NUMBERS: NONE (Completely sanded off by me 40 years ago).
REGISTRATION NO. (From Vehicle Classification Inspection Form DA 461-5 dated 20 feb 1969, Mileage 20988): 28 6426;
CONTRACT NO. (From dash data plate): OA-33-019-ORD-630;
DATE DELIVERED: 10/52;
INSPECTOR (From dash data plate): EPM;
ENGINE NO. (Original is unknown because I replaced it with a rebuilt): 4J374131.
RESPONSIBLE AGENCY FOR PROCUREMENT: Ordnance Dept.;
RESPONSIBLE AGENCY FOR DEPOT MAINTENANCE: Marine Corps.
RECONDITIONED (From aluminum plate on dash): "reconditioned at Tooele Ordnance Depot DATE 6-59 (IROAN) ODOM 13672;
STRANGELY: (1) Instrument panel is upside down with High Beam indicator over Speedometer; (2) No extra lifting rings that were purportedly a USMC signature.
I bought this vehicle from the US Gov't. Property Disposal Office at 8th Logistical Command, "Leghorn General Depot QAD, Supply Branch", Livorno, Italy in 1969/70.
What do you think?

It's not uncommon for someone to have the instrument cluster completely disassembled and re-assemble it inverted. It can be forced to work either way. I'll email you a copy of the M38A1 survey form. You must be "Bluewater Sailor"?

Wes,
Rec'd. the form and manuals list. Thanks. Will get to work filling out the form. Yes, I'm a.k.a. Bluewater Sailor - depends upon where I sit down to compute. Do you already have an idea about whether or not I should stencil "U.S.Army" on the hood?

A dash responsible agency plate that list Ordnance for procurer and Marine Corp for maintenance/depot would have been a USMC unit. The problem is we can not ascertain if the jeep was an Army unit later turned in and obtained by the Marine Corp or if it was originally procured by Army Ordnance for the Marine Corp. Under the Army Ordnance contracting system all the M38's would have had an Army hood number at the factory until around 54/55 when the factory started providing M38A1's in the correct color for each service.
