Another day another question
Somebody here how knows the correct answer? Got some brandnew shock absorbers for my M38 but the are black. Now I would like to know the correct color, were they not green at delivering-day to the Army?
Otherwise this black color is primer only....
Ryan does not mention color in his book. He does mention that frames received black from the frame shop were assembled with axles and springs and then painted OD as an assembly. This should be evidence enough that the shocks were also probably OD at this point in assembly.
In this factory shipping lot the right front shock appears to match the hue/tint of the rest of the jeep. _________________ Wes K

I have two sets of M38 take-off shocks.
Today, one set is unrestored. I have sanded down to bare metal around the Monroe part number showing 800991 & 992. Date code 4C1, 12B1.
There is no evidence that the shocks were any color other than OD.
