Brian,
Wow.........as a newbie to mil jeeps I just assumed Army jeeps always used canvas seat covers.....so this is interesting! Off topic, but related.........the first M37 I bought is a '52 Air Force truck with almost all of it's original parts. It's a great reference vehicle. But it had black vinyl seat covers on the driver's seat cushions. When I pulled the covers I found remnants of an OD colored vinyl with a raised grain still attached to the spring frame. I thought that was weird, but dismissed it. Then later I ordered a few NOS passenger seat bottom cushions listed as for the M43. Checking the ORD the M43 pass seat bottom cushion has the same PN as the M37 driver's seat bottom.........so I thought I hit the lottery! But when I opened the box the cushions had that same OD raised grain vinyl........and I assumed the vinyl was used at the very end of M37 production. Maybe that' not the case!
I did search on "leatherette"............very interesting! Thanks!
Regards,
Bob |

Sorry about hijacking this thread, but can someone tell me what supports the cushions on a 1951 M38? I have new seat frames and it looks like there are flat supports which would accommodate a 3/4" piece of plywood cut to fit. The ORD9 SNL G-740 says it has 2 springs per seat, but I don't see how the new seat frames I have would use the springs. |

Hi Mark.
The original seat covers with springs sat on a pan that had a raised lip, two holes for bolts, and two tabs that slipped under one of those bars. Triangles
punched out of the pan were folded over the bottom of the cover where it went under the pan.
Check Midwest Military, Army Jeep Parts or Weebee Webbing for photos
Most everyone today just chucks a piece of plywood on there and ties the new
cushion and foam to the bottom of the plywood. The pans in most cases disappeared over time.
If you can find springs some folks swear that arrangement is actually more comfortable than the foam.
Use the search function above. Plenty of posts on seats, springs, etc.
Take care, _________________ Brian

Mine still have/had the leatherette. I bought the canvas for the whole jeep, but later went back to the leatherette for the drivers bottom seat. More comfortable. _________________ Rusty, 1952 M38, Koenig hard top. |

Brian,
You mention the steel pan that the cushions originally attached to.....so I'm just wondering.......did the M38 and M38A1 seat cushions use the same PN steel pan? Was the same pan used in the M715 seats? Don't go digging up part numbers and wasting your valuable time..........I'm just asking if you know off the top of your head. I can scrounge around thru the ORDs later if need be.
thanks,
