After measuring the battery box it appears a standard automotive battery is not going to fit so what are the options for the battery location? I see in one of Wes's photos where it is mounted on the firewall in the place formerly occupied by the air cleaner but I would like to be able to use the stock air cleaner so is there anywhere else it could be safely relocated like maybe where the voltage regulator would sit! Is there a 12v battery made that would fit in the battery box?
This photo ID's the dimensions of the 2HN military battery:
Did you notice the photo tells you the civvy 22NF will fit?
Compare that info to a standard BCI Battery dimension listing:

You may also wish to consider cold cranking amps when choising a civvy battery that fits the M38A1 battery box. You can pay dearly for a higher rating single battery or pay less for a lower rating and buy two which will leave your battery box looking stock! _________________ Wes K

I use 51R batteries, a little bit smaller than the 2HN, but available readily at Sam's Club here in Del City... I got two for the M-38 CDN and work great... Have to be a little creative with hold downs but... I am not displaying for judging, just daily driver at this point...
Hope this helps... _________________ Hal, KB1ZQ

51R is what I use too. Two will fit in a M38A1 cowl battery box and look almost stock as already suggested. I get mine at Interstate Battery warehouse and last time I think I paid 38 bucks each. I use them in my M37 in 24v mode, they work great with higher CCA than the original military batteries. _________________ '52 Dodge M37, '42 GPW, '48 FrankenJeep CJ2A/M38, '50 CJV-35(U), '51 M38, '42 WC-57 Command Car, '44 WC-51 Weapons , (2) M1941 Sperry 60" Anti-Aircraft Searchlights, John Deere M-gator, '44 White M3A1 Scout Car

Zeke converted his M38a1 to 12V. Like Wes says you could fill the battery box with a pair of 51 series batts wired parallel.. how sweet would that be..
Ahem.. Zeke update your signature with your vehicle type before Wes has you drop and give him twenty the hard way.. _________________ keep 'em rollin'

My Bad, CCA and AH are actually unrelated. Try to stick with the Amp Hour (AH) rating for comparisons. The military 2HN was a 45 AH battery. I don't see any military references offering a CCA rating.
I have been using diehard 51R batteries for years and they work well with the original battery hold downs. just check on any shifting after hitting big bumps, but overall work very well
It will be fine. I use one to move around Dodge WCs. Cranks well and sometime its takes a bit to get fuel up. _________________ '52 Dodge M37, '42 GPW, '48 FrankenJeep CJ2A/M38, '50 CJV-35(U), '51 M38, '42 WC-57 Command Car, '44 WC-51 Weapons , (2) M1941 Sperry 60" Anti-Aircraft Searchlights, John Deere M-gator, '44 White M3A1 Scout Car
