|
|
I just found a complete Ramsey 50 winch setup with PTO, shafts, joints, etc. but I had to also purchase the M-38 it was factory mounted on. The Jeep is in decent condition and about two-thirds restored. The winch is in excellent condition with one exception - the shaft that the engagement lever mounts on has had the end buggered. It looks like someone lost the lever and used a pipe wrench to engage/disengage the winch. A brand new lever was furnished with the Jeep but the end of the shaft is so chewed up that the lever can’t be used.
My question is this: Can a new shaft be located through surplus parts, from Ramsey, or am I going to have to have one made? I think it would be relatively simple to use the old shaft as a pattern and have a machinist duplicate it with an end that would mount the handle. Any ideas? _________________ 1952 M38 |

I found no evidence any replacement exists anywhere for that shaft ORD PN 7411958, NSN 2540-00-741-1958 or 2520-00-741-1958, Ramsey PN 59 or WO PN 118259.
I would suggest you disassemble the winch and hand the shaft (TT), lever (WW) and end housing (H) along with the hardware (VV, UU, XX & YY) to a machinist and let them resolve the issue in their shop.
An alternative is to reshape the shaft end that carries the lever to match the lever by weld buildup or grinding.
Another alternative is to weld the lever to the shaft. _________________ Wes K

Thanks! I guess the machinist route is the way to go. From what I read, the winch is surely worth fixing right. _________________ 1952 M38 |

Do you happen to have the machinists drawings so I can have one made? It would be nice to take the old one out and put the new one in all in the same day. _________________ 1952 M38 |

I sent the guy that did mine the case, the lever, and the shaft. It all worked out well. |

Do you have a hood number and serial number for that jeep? We are trying to track winch jeeps. _________________ Ryan Miller

Thanks Bill!
What about the original poster Biff - that may or may not have been factory installed, but the information could be helpful. _________________ Ryan Miller

I got your survey form but am up to my ears in other things. I’ll get it back to you when I get a chance. _________________ 1952 M38 |
