My M38 has original stock 24 Volt Distributor.

Have a crack in cap & looking at replacing cap ONLY onto original metal base.

See a new looking hard plastic cap replacement on eBay that looks shorter than original & appears to leave coil exposed.

Also see spark plug leads are push on...so no requirement for original ignition leads.

Has anyone else had replacement issues with new type?

Please be more specific on which part you are discussing.

The metal cover (Item C in the parts list) has the threaded towers for the shielded ignition wire's nuts.

The cap (Item E in the parts list) has smooth towers and only the wire core & insulator enters the cap.

This is the correct IAU1048 cap:

Thanks Wes.

This is is going to sound STUPID...but I've never seen the part E inner cap before. Ive had my distributor top with threaded towers off several times over the years & never sighted the inner cap before!!

I will pull it off now and have a look for it.

In mean time-do you recommend replacing both distributor Part C & Part E when replacing for new?

No, Failure of the Item C cover is extremely rare. As for item E the cap generally failure is related to cracks, excessive carbon tracking burns and worn rotor contact.

You have probably not noticed in the past that the item E cap is retained inside the Item C cover by the three screws Item AG.

As a side note; on the blow up of innercap (E) on the end of the arm is shown a brass stud... this has a spring slipped on it (T, not shown in picture). don't loose it until you have another replacement cap, they come with it.
