|
|
I have read several old threads about the topic and looking for your advice. My m 38 was running fine for years then started to run rough about month ago. It stays at hunting camp so I took it to shade tree and he cleaned the carb. It made it back to camp but wasn’t 100%. Now two weeks later. it runs rougher or won’t start and gas is half inch deep in the intake when I pulled carb off and looked down in the hole. That doesn’t seem right. Really floods out and will not crank. I am thinking something has happened when he cleaned it . All throttle and choke cable are proper tension So............I am no mechanic but quick study.......I took carb off and brought home. Any advice. Thanks _________________ 1952 M38 |

Thanks Wesk. I will open her up tonigh and investigate . It flloods some kind of awlful. I paid the country mechanic 50 bucks and repossessed it yesterday.... I think he did something to some part the first time he cleaned the carb. I wonder if he put the needle back in?. Oh mercy. This will be fun learning about the carb. Something I should know a little bit about and my teenage sons _________________ 1952 M38 |

Oh mercy. Got the downloads and took apart my first carb! I feel like a mechanic now Wesk!
First observations
1. I do not have a Discharge Ball or Discharge Ball Weight? How do I get one?
2. Metering rod spring is missing
I have ordered a rebuild kit from Kaiser
Can I find the discharge ball and weight or similar parts at my local NAPA or advice on making one
Thanks _________________ 1952 M38 |

Don't waste your money on old military NOS carb kits. There are three kits on the market. If you have the original YS637S carb that the M38 came with.
A dual application kit for both YS637S (M38 & CJV35) and YS950S (M38A1 & M170). sold by Midwest Military & Army Jeep Parts.
A single M38 application sold by Ron Fitzpatrick
a single app Omix-Ada offshore kit
Old NOS Army kits.
Getting a good kit is not a problem but finding individual parts not sold in the kits is.
That small check ball is a very common; Oops it falls out on the floor and overlooked.
Visit my photo album (2nd one) or use the link and go to my M38 Fuel System sub-album and review the data I have there.
Midwest Military & AJP kit.
Ron Fitzpatrick's kit.
Omix-Ada Offshore Kit
Note neither of these kits includes the correct M38 carb base to intake gasket.
Also use care choosing which springs to use for the two vacuum diaphragms.

YS637S vs YS950S metering rods & springs.
Comparison of YS637S metering rod to YS950S metering rod.
A corrected illustration for proper position of YS637S metering rod diaphragm spring. _________________ Wes K

i did not try AJP but Midwest said their 'usual" rebuild kit is back ordered for 8 months and what they stock is one like Kaiser. I had already ordered a Kaiser yesterday and called them this am and they said discharge ball and weight was included. gosh i hope so! _________________ 1952 M38 |

i called kaiser back and asked them to check again.....this time he said it was not in there. I then called Daytona Supply and they gave me the specs for the ball and weight. Kudos to Ron there ....very helpful _________________ 1952 M38 |

Ron at Daytona Parts Company ( Kaiser steered me to him for discharge ball) knew the Carter YS very well . He said that discharge ball is just a 1/8" ball bearing and the discharge weight needs to be square or round stock bar that cut to lenght will be 1/8" under top of carb. Said he has been in the business for 45 years . An important tip he gave me was that if any of my original brass fiitings or jets were in great shape, use them and not any from these kits that are made overseas. _________________ 1952 M38 |
