I'm getting ready to order my paint stencils. I really have no idea how to determine the unit markings for the front bumper and bumperettes. I figured that I would just pick an airborne unit since I went to Army jump school in 1990. Looks like the only airborne unit that conducted parachute operations during the Korean war was the 187th Infantry Division. Based on a quick search, they were part of the 101st Airborne Division. Can someone tell me how to determine the bumper markings for this unit?

Reading the bumper markings is from left to right and starts with the highest command and then the sub units. Reading such markings from left to right on a front bumper to include:
1. The Major Command it is assigned to
2. The Intermediate Command it is assigned to
3. The Unit or Activity it is assigned to
4. The vehicle number for convoy purposes, aka: Order of March
So yours would be 101AB 187 then the company ( like company C or Headquarters company, ect.) and then finally the vehicle number or order of march.
So 101 AB 187 (star) C-24 would be 101st Airborne, 187th Infantry, Company C, vehicle # 24.
You will also find all the details you need in the Army's AR-850-5 and the TB 746-93-1 . Keep in mind that you may wish to use the appropriate reg in effect at the time frame you want your jeep to represent.

My father in law was in Korea in the 187th Regimental Combat Team and I have a picture of him standing in front of 2 jeeps with unit markings which he said was taken in Korea. The front bumper is clearly shown and is marked:
187 RCT HQ5
This doesn't seem to completely conform to the regulations cited but I used them on my M38. _________________ 52 M38
One of the first things you learn in the military is the book is not always followed. The military has had a hard time for years saying what they mean and meaning what they say. When the services tried to put very unspecific data in their regulations system where one is required to follow every detail perfectly without error they soon found out their data did not adequately cover all situations. Hence over time they have moved most of these guidance publications out of the Regulations System and into the Manual System where they belonged all along. Manuals are guides to be used to accomplish a task in a way that insures fit, performance and intention while allowing the troop to use good judgement and economical processes.
Hence the many variations seen in the markings depending on equipment, location, needs and local directives. _________________ Wes K

In the Korean War, the 187th Regiment, once gliders, since WW2 parachute, was tranfered from the 11th Abn, then occupying Japan- these including the 1/187th, 2/187th, 3/187th battalions. They were basically autonomous & called the 187th ARCT "Airborne Regimental Combat Team" Their two jumps were at Sukchon and Sunchon, but participated in a dozen ground operations. I want to say on their second jump was the 2nd Ranger Company, all Black, pretty glorious stuff on top of the 187th's glory. After Korea they were passed around the Army in various reorginazations, finally, to this day, winding up in the 101st. My M38 is marked 187th, Korean War, the regiment's recon platoon "R-7" Romeo as in Recon. On the other side 1/187 ARCT. I suppose I should put "HHC" before R-7. At a car show, I talked in depth to an old bhoy that did both jumps. He said the first jump was with old WW2 jeeps, MB/GPWs, the second had a lot of M38s. Made me happy. I have a 1945 GPW I might also do 187th in Korea.... I HAVE to be airborne, because i was =) & there are so many 82nd or 101st jeeps out there!
still trying to figure out how to put myt 1945 GPW & an M100 1951 trailer on my profile... every few months.... some bloody machine tells me I'm doing it wrong, oh well, both vehicles running great _________________
