|
|
I know it is impossible to find a spare tire carrier for a M170. Next step for me is to have someone frabricate one. Does anyone have some good detailed photos along with measurements so i can get one made?
Thanks

the tm9-8015-2 manual in the download section has some nice pics( but no dimensions).i wonder if you looked at the pics and scaled it to other parts in the pics, could you make one? just a suggestion. cheers, frank _________________ Frank 1952 M38 Cdn CAR 52-31812,1952 M38 Cdn F100005, 1967 Jeepster, 1999 XJ, 1999 TJ " rubiCLONE" |

Too far to trust sending you mine. Look at the pic below. The main tube is bolted in three places; rear wheel well, center of spare (shown) and to the floor. The height is the same as the wheel well, the depth is to the floor behind the wheel body cavity (front of the tire rests against it) the bending allows to fit the tire. I would make the center section as shown. The retainer matches the off set when you hold a straight edge on the front of the tire across the center hole; measure the depth to the center metal lip of the spare. Smoothly bend a pipe to look like the one in the picture and not interfere with the tire when mounted to the center section.
The second picture top left shows the foot that mounts to the floor.
Remember the spare goes in with the lug bolt side facing the inside of the jeep.

I think there was a gentleman down in Brazil who was making up his own parts like that. Was it Claudio? Anyway, he might be someone to hit up for what you need. I believe he has a M38A1 but he did some very nice drafting and fabricating work making new replacement parts to size. |

Search in the photo gallery for a fellow members album, "JimmyParks".
He was gracious enough to offer detail pic measurements of the spare tire carrier. _________________ Always Looking for M170 Parts and bits |

Hi, I can take extra photos if needed. I actually have 2 M170s (1962 Willys and 1967 Kaiser), both had original spare tire brackets.
I have done a reproduction of the upper stretcher rails, based on one of the originals.
I can guarantee the spare tire bracket is of a very easy construction. First of all I would place the spare tire (new tire please) inside the proper embossed well, so determining tire lug centering. All other bracket dimensions are based on the existing holes, where the bracket shall be bolted to.
Otherwise I could also recommend you: start your job doing a template of the bracket with an easily foldable wire, based on the photos you have and the location of the holes on the spare tire area. These will help you finding the closest configuration of the bracket. You won't miss.

I know a guy that has two m170's, one is being turned into a rock crawler. it does have the spare tire rack and he is not going to use it. I tried to talk him out of modifying it as for a NH jeep it has a good body needing only front hat channels, front floor, and a little side work. The other one he might be willing to sell but I have not seen it yet. |
