I just had to update you on my latest. Earlier this year I tried to get a used F head to run correctly. Some of the scenario was on this topic http://willysmjeeps.com/v2/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=3462&highlight= and this one http://willysmjeeps.com/v2/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=3366&highlight=. Anyway I had this L head that came in my 1956 CJ5. It ran pretty good and used very little oil. Wes had told me on this site that it was a 1943 engine casting. The only thing I did to it was work the valves over. After aquiring the F head and at least getting it running as the above links tell, it had an extreme oil consumption problem. So I thought I would swap the L back in and completely rebuild the F this winter. Before I did I thought I would ring the L. This all came about from earlier posts expressing the "do it right the first time" method. When I proceeded to poke the pistons out I found the L had never been bored and had very little ridge. I was feeling pretty good about this until I poked a couple of pistons to find all of the rings in pieces and stuck. The cylinder walls were scored due to the broken rings. The pistons had been so hot from previous owners that they were distorted and the ring groves were ruined. Since I now needed pistons and rings on the L I decided to rebuild the L. So to the macine shop it went. It got everything it needed. Bored to .040, head checked and shaved, crank turned and valve job. I put it back in Thanksgiving weekend and it is running fine. The whole job with machine work, pistons, cam bushing, rod and main bearings, gasket set cost $690. Although I still wanted the F to put in my Jeep I am well satisfied with the L and after all summer of worrying with this it is now time to enjoy my labor and let that L soothe me down the road. Thanks again for your help and instructions from this site in answering my questions in months and years past.
Glad you're back on the road. We'll wait for your post on the teardown of the F134. _________________ Wes K

The F 134 is going to take a back seat for a while. I know it runs and runs good even though it was embarrassing to see all the smoke. I had the head off to replace the valve guides and seals that were discussed via this site. All to no avail. I had a local guy tell me since the cylinders were so far out of spec the oil ring probably was not scraping the oil off. Anyway all of that speculation just leads to the same conclusion......it needs to be bored and ran through the machine shop. At least I know what I have and if I need it I will know what to do. It sure was a sweet runner even with the smoke.
