I needed a fuel pump to replace the one that failed on my 1952 M38A1. At some point in the past some one installed a fuel pump from a jeep wagon.
It would have been very cost prohibitive for me to install a correct military pump considering the mods that have been done in the past to my fuel lines.
So I decided to use a aftermarket replacement. I searched the forums and could not find any post giving a definitive "Yes it works" review on the Omix-Ada part # 17709.03 fuel pump.
I took a chance and ordered it. It fit perfectly and as an added surprise my wipers now work! I tried every thing in the past to get them going, seems it was the fuel pump all along.
I have not tested the fuel pressure though since a friend has my gauge. But I did take it for an extensive drive and even let it idle for 20 mins and it seemed to run fine.
As a word of warning though, the post I did find about this pump were for people trying to install it on M38s, and from the reviews it does not fit that model.
M38 and the A1 use the same pumps. The Military pump's evolution went thru about 7 to 10 part numbers but they all interchange. So that pump will work on either engine. The civvy pumps work ok on either engine but they do not get installed with the military pump's spacer. Using the spacer with the civvy pump will get the fuel pressure a bit low.
When you want to keep the vac wipers the later dual vac/fuel pumps for the CJ3B and CJ5 work quite well. The big issue is switching to slip on hoses instead of metal tube fittings on the vacuum side.
Military pump
Civvy pump uses metal lines for fuel and rubber hoses for vacuum. _________________ Wes K

I am guessing that rubber lines would decrease vacuum pressure in the system due to expansion of the rubber. Is that correct?
I have been attempting to install my fuel pump but struggling a bit due to a large diameter oil line. I got the right one on there now so the FP should go on easier.
When did the M38 switch over from the FP with out priming lever to the FP with priming lever? I bought a priming lever type from MWM. I also have a core that does not have a priming lever and looks to have a breather/vent on the back side of it. I know that these pumps originally had the long mounting bolts. I have also seen a one of these longer bolts that is about half the length. It was part of a large MV parts buy and I sold it on Ebay with out really looking it over. I wish that I would have kept it. It is possible that this bolt was modified. Is there a mounting variation where one long bolt and one slightly shorter mounting bolt is used?[/list]
Vacuum is suction. It will try to contract the hose.
The M38 was not originally equipped with the fuel pump with prime handle. That was an M38A1 original equipment item. There was in all likelyhood no attempt by the military to insure a pump with or without handle was used for field replacement. The supply system would automatically make the supercedure and issue whatever pump it had available locally. Whatever pump came in the box was used.
There would have been long type bolts with shorter threaded ends for the civvy pump that didn't use the spacer. I have seen civvy installations with a long bolt on front and short bolt in rear. _________________ Wes K
