I've just had an 'interesting' visiter which I'll come back to in a moment.
Now some years ago when I was into jeeps but couldn't own one I met a jeep owner that claimed his jeep was the one that Monty rode up the beach after he got out of his DUKW on D-day.
That owner either stopped claiming that or his jeep dissapeared as I've never seen it since.
A couple of years ago in Belgium I saw a jeep on show that claimed to have been on board some famous WWII US carrier I pointed out to the owner that it had a Hotchkiss chassis and the number suggested it was a 1960 model, he said that the chassis had been replaced. I pointed out that it had a Hotchkiss body, he said that was replaced before he got the jeep!!. He wouldn't let me see under the bonnet.
Today a new m38 owner (and new to the MV world) came to see me to take some photos for his restoration, he might have had an m38 chassis but the photos he showed me were (I guess) CJ.
He asked about the markings on my jeep and I explained that the 8055th was the unit that looked after the Commonwealth Division and most of the Dutch and Belgies etc. He asked about my trailer and I explained that the markings were those of the EVAC unit that looked after the Commonwealth Div etc etc. and they were painted that way because that was what the veterans recognised and knew; he asked about the markings on my trucks and I said I had no idea, but that was what they had on when I got them from the DMRO.
He then told me that he had it confirmed that his jeep had been with the 4077th and that was how he was restoring it.
Trying not to smile I asked who had confirmed this and he said the (UK) MVT. at which I had to smile again.
So..... what is the most outlandish claim you have ever heard for a jeep?
All the best,
Dave
