Disassembling a 24volt generator

I would like to take a 24 volt generator apart, clean it up and replace brushes if needed. Are there any particular surprises that I might run into when I remove the end plates. I have removed the small plate on the pulley end. I noticed a fiber gear and a metal gear. I do not know what part these gears play. So If some one could enlighten me I would appreciate it.

I took my generator apart without much problem. You will need a wheel puller to get the front (Pully) end off; the bearingis pressed on and with the front being aluminum it is not a good idea to hammer on it. I had to replace my front cover due to the lower pivot point being broken. A gent over on Yahoo had a cover for me to replace mine with. The Brushes are available from McMaster-Carr (65705K52 Carbon Brush With Shunt Wire & Terminal, 1/4" Thk X 5/8" W X 1" H In stock at $9.22 per Pack This item is only sold in Packs of 2) for about $10.00 plus shipping. they will need to be filed a little to fit (mainly at an angle to help them wear in better). Also do not rush and find a good workbench to work on as putting the brushes back over the armature can be tricky... the generator is heavy and makes it difficult to hold...

Also the gears on the fron are for slinging oil onto the bearings... The little bolt opens so you can pour oil into it.

I took the brush end plate off, the Brushes looked good, communtator looked clean as well. I didn't have much problem as I had anticipated putting brush end plate back on. I didn't take the drive end apart, it all look good too.
