Looking for some info for painting my m38a1 when the time comes.
What does everyone use to paint their engine/trans/transfer case and axles with and how is it holding up? (Spray bomb or spray gun)

How did you prep engine? Should i sandblast the engine after plugging every hole possible and stay away from seals, or scrub it with cleaners and prime? I was going to use spray bombs for the little stuff like starter, valve cover, etc.

If I do use a spray bomb is self etching primer sufficient enough for sandblasted metal or is there a better primer for the little stuff?

I know most go to a local paint store for body paint but If you had to where is the best place online to get semi gloss OD2430 and primer? Not many if any auto stores that mix paint by me for miles. I did read to use two part epoxy primer on the body.

Thanks Jason

I prepped the engine/trans/transfer of my M38 by scrubbing with engine cleaner, a little wire brushing and sprayed with rattle can paint from the hardware store - paint is still holding up well several years later. For the exhaust manifold I used "high temperature" paint from the hardware store - it also is holding up well. For military paint I've used Army Jeep Parts and Gillespie paints. Also had some paint mixed at a PPG auto paint dealer - OD semi-gloss was in their catalog.

I pressure washed the tranny and the motor was hot tanked before reassembly. Sand blasted the body and some parts like axles and motor tin. I got my paint from Kaiser willys and the primer from the local paint store. I spray painted primer and paint with sprayer from Harbor freight, looks fine. There is a lot of good products and many different ways to go. What it boils down to is budget and skill set.

Thank you for the replys, it gives me a start on something I haven't done before. I like to get information from people who have experienced it before then to be jumping in blind and having to do it again because I didn't ask.
