Could somebody give me the length of the j bolts for the battery retainer on an M38a1...Thanks in advanced. Henry Also I am planning a full restoration of the M38a1 starting this Spring and am wondering if there are any good instruction books (not military manuals) on restoring. Need info from taking it all apart to finishing it.

Ord 9 shows 5/16 x 8 3/4"

However I just bought a set from a reputable vendor and
They are 5/16 x 10"

I'm using 22NF Batteries (the best equivalent) and
There 9' tall.

Hope that helps.

Tom

Hello Henry,
This website is one of the best references you will find.

I believe this is the book you are looking for:

The Jeep CJ Rebuilders Manual 1946-1971 by Moses Ludel

This is a step by step teardown and rebuild of each major assembly with photos along the way, from pulling the tub to rebuilding the engine, transmission and transfer.

The author essentially tore down a CJ and rebuilt it, and stopped at every step along the way and took photos.

Take care, and good luck!

I'll second on the book of Moses as a great book. Check Amazon.
I have 2 pairs of dry 2hn batteries for $300 a pair plus shipping if anyone is interested.

Just be sure you keep your Military manuals on the same desk with the Moses Ludel guide book. There are many differences between the m38A1 and the CJ5.

A Good book to add to that desk is SM-1046 which details all servicing, overhaul and disassembly on the CJ3B and CJ5/6.
