Hi Guys,
Looking online I see there are 2 front bumpers being sold.....an early "short" bumper and a later "long" bumper. I think the early short one is something like 45" and the long one is 54" long. So I checked the ORD to see the SN cutoff when the short one stopped being used, and although it does list 2 front bumpers......it doesn't say when the short one was superceded by the long bumper. So does anyone know at which SN the long bumper started being used?
It also seems the longer bumper comes in 2 flavors. One has a hole for the engine hand starter crank and one does not. Again, no mention in the ORD about this. Does anyone know when the hole for the hand crank stopped being put in the bumper?
Wes, looked in your albums and didn't see anything on this.
The short bumper used on the very/very early M38A1's was the same part number (WO# 801386, ORD# 7372818) and appearance as the M38 bumper. It has the hole for the handcrank. M38A1's did not have a crank pulley designed for use with a handcrank.
The wide front bumper (WO# 808969, ORD# 8331831) did not come with a handcrank hole in it.
This is one of several items that changed during production but the ORD has no serial switch listed. The only place to get a definitive answer on when & which serial the change occurred at is to get someone like Keith to find the factory blueprint or the factory production BOM that addresses the bumper. _________________ Wes K

Yes, I am somewhat convinced that early 1953 was the latest the short bumper survived. _________________ Wes K
