Went to replace the worn out oil inlet line and discovered that there is no way to remove it on my M38a1 without removing the fuel pump. I was thinking of replacing the original elbow with a swivel elbow so that if I ever need to replace the line I wouldn't have to remove the fuel pump. Has anyone done this? Anyone see an issue with using a swivel elbow? I figured they are used on hydraulic hoses all the time which are under greater pressures and temps than the F134. What do you guys think?
I'm not sure there's enough room there for anything as fancy as swivel elbow. Have you tried accessing it with a crow's foot? _________________ Wes K

I had the same problem on the engine I'm working on.....and like the man said.....there's barely enough room there for the cast elbow much less anything else. Looks to me like this is one of those situations where an ounce of cure is worth a bunch of extra work. Route the oil line in the most protected location you can find and support it with really good clips fitted with rub-preventing sleeves. Another thing that really jammed things in tight in the corner created by the front mounting plate and the engine block was the fact that my fuel pump had been installed without the 9/16" spacer between it and the engine block. Once I installed this spacer there was plenty of room for the flexible oil line......not the wrench to put it on or take it off.....but enough to run and protect the oil line. In my opinion if you could get a hose made with a tight 90 degree fitting such that the connecting nut was rotated 90 degrees it would make it much easier to get it on and off from below. It would have to be pipe thread fitting to screw into the block and I don't know how you'd secure the rigid part of the tube short of screwing in a straight inverted flare fitting but by then once you got the hose with the 90 degree end up there you might be into the fuel pump again. It would definitely be worth some experimentation....if pressure hoses weren't worth their weight in gold!! Good luck! _________________ Jim
Well I might experiment. I do have the spacer installed and I think there is enough room for a swivel with the spacer. I know a guy at a rubber and gasket place so if I figure something out that works I will post it here. At least I can get the fuel filter gasket at my local Autozone so it isn't that big of a deal to get it off.
