| I noticed Wes has a photo of a fording gas cap on the site. I was wondering if these are still available or not. My M38 is fully equipped except for the snorkle pipes and I thought the cap would be a nice first step to completing the entire package. |

| Yes they show up often. Watch the Ebay motors sites for M38, M38A1, and M37. I bought two and they are very nice with chain and clip. John |

There are two main types of gas caps for the M38/M38A1 jeeps - one is a sealed cap without a vent and the other has valve that can open and close to relieve pressure (or vacuum). My M38 has a cap without the valve but has a vent line running from the gas tank to the air cleaner to provide vacuum release. In a fording situation the air cleaner would have been connected to a snorkel so as to provide air to the engine and venting system including the transmission and bell housing. My M38A1 has the vented gas cap but a more simple venting system. The cap is part of the overall vent system and what would be installed originally would be determined by what jeep you have and what type of vent system it has. The venting systems changed as the military decided it wasn't necessary to have every vehicle capable of fording.

There are three main choices in caps.
A - Non-vented - required with fording systems.
B - Vented - Used with any non-fording set-up.
C - Selectable (vented/non-vented) use with any fording or non fording system.
1 - Early M38's had a more simple fording system.
2 - Late M38's had a more complex fording system.
3 - Early M38A1's came with the late M38 type fording system.
4 - Late M38A1's came without any fording system plumbing (except USMC units).
Note:
Late M38A1 were often converted to fording capability using a field service kit. Most USMC were full fording capable both early and late. The field installed fording plumbing kit is not to be confused with the deep water fording kits which contained the snorkel and tall exhaust pipe and were a needed addition to any basic fording equipped jeep.
