Does anyone have a photo that shows the correct position of the VIN tag located on the right wheel well? Thanks.

evanso1975,
Thanks for the link. It appears the patent plate is a repro since it's aluminum and all the other plates on the dash are brass.

I try to avoid the term VIN when discussing vehicles built before 1972. They did not come with a VIN. They came with a manufacturer's serial number only. The VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) was legislated on the industry by federal law in 1973. The new VIN consisted of the basic good ole manufacturer's serial number and required additional numbers and letters to further ID the manufacturer, the date of manufacturer, the engine installed and etc.

The lower right dash plate is a vehicle identification plate and the plate on the right rear wheel house is a Willys Patent Plate. The dash plates (spec'd by the military) were brass and the fender plate (Used by Willys on most of their vehicles, both civvy and military) was aluminum.

Wes,
Thanks for the clarification. The aluminum plate looks a little "too new" to be original to me but the number matches the ID plate on the dash. I sent you an email regarding your survey.
Thanks.

The patent plates are etched and they usually survive 50 years in very good shape with a coat or two of GI paint protecting them for all those years. If they are cleaned up correctly they will look brand new.

Wes,
Regarding the MSN plate, when I started looking closely I noticed a hole in the wheel well behind the plate itself. along with that hole there's another one several inches below it. Was there something that would attach to these tow holes?

The factory original wheel house has only the four screw holes on the patent plate area. Any other holes behind the plate or close to it are Bubba holes.
