Can anyone help me find the correct O.D. paint for a 1955 Army M38A1?

OD 2430 (2XXX means semi-gloss) is the original factory paint applied in two coats with the first coat using flattener and acting as the primer coat. I'l skip the discourse on the evolution of paint numbers from the Army/Navy in WWII through today's GSA catalog FS595. Bottom line the 4 digit color codes were phased out during the 54 thru 57 period. The 5 digit system replaced 2430 with a close but not the same 24087 (2XXXX means semi-gloss) which is the paint the Army started using for field repaints in 1954.

Today no one manufactures an identical composition and color paint. Many chemicals have long since been discontinued or banned from use.

If you have a jeep tub that has the original paint somewhere underneath like behind the glove box then I would suggest for the best quality paint available locally and supported locally you should take the piece of metal sample to your local paint vendor and have it matched using modern paints.

If for some reason this is not possible then the closest paints in color and correct semi-gloss are Gillespie's 23070 and Army Jeep Parts Late WWII OD. You have freight to contend with but most folks here have indicated good results with both paints.

Thanks for the information. Looking forward to getting rid of the paint brush finish on the existing paint job.

Just a FYI.. i used Gillespie 23070 and was satisfied with the results.
It flowed well and parts painted at different times matched in both
color and gloss. See my album on pg8 for color, gloss and results
if you like..
