There are several similar methods for removing a stubborn axle. First temp install the hub (with or without the brake drum) for something to grip and pull. Still won't pop out get a slide puller and fasten it to the lugs and hammer her out. Can't find a slide puller then wrap a chain around the hub/drum and snap it a few times.

I second Wes' suggestion of the slide hammer approach. The only thing holding the axle in with the six bolts removed is the friction between the outside of the bearing cup and the inside of the bearing pocket of the axle housing. Could be rusty there if not maintained and water got past the shims and retainer. Doesn't have anything to do with the taper fit of the hub on the axle.

Thanks for the information. I am going to hunt around for a slide hammer. I tried flipping drum, but it is still resisting me.

OK - i found slide hammer and was able to get axle shaft out. what i did not realize is brake backing plate still can not slide off. Looks like hub needs to come off to get at outer seal?

You must be working without a manual? Both the M38 and the M38A1 manuals tell you to pull the drum and hub together with a puller, then remove the grease seal retainer 6 bolts and the grease seals. Then remove the backing plate, then the shim stack and bearing retainer. That then leaves only the axle shaft in the housing with it's pressed on bearings.
