What are the patches (for lack of the correct term) on the rear of the M38 next to the tailgate hooks ? They look like a welded on after thought.

They were added in the field so that the arctic tops would not cause the body seam in the corners to split! It is found in MWO ORD G740-W6 14 May 53. Search the technical forum for 'arctic' to get more data.

Have fun!

Interesting. Would this imply that if the patches are there your jeep had an Arctic Top or where all vehicles reinforced just in case they later might have an Arctic Top installed?

My M38 has the patches but has a military installed CJ3A civi top. There is no evidence of it ever having a true M38 Arctic Top with the straight windshield.

Probably splitting hairs here but just wondering.

No, the doublers do not a Arctic Top carrier make.

I believe Ryan's M38 book shows the date the factory started welding the doublers on the rear corners.
