Hi Guys

I have recently put my gearbox and engine together without the gasket as I cannot see myself ever doing any fording ( eventhough the weather in England at the moment is trying to convince me differently Very Happy )

Now the question.... does the portion of he starter that connects to the bellhousing need a gasket, or can it be left out?

Thank You

Nic Jackson

Hi Nic,

Yes, that's need a gasket thick 0,030 (0,76mm) and paper overall.
Discription: Gasket, starter; part #8328149, WO-804396.

Chris,
Why do you feel a gasket is needed? The Non-fording jeeps did not bother with fiber main gasket or the two copper crush gaskets for the two bolts.

Hi Wes,
First, I know that Nic in the restoration of his M38A1 (Nekaf) as much as possible striving for originality.
Second,When I removing starters, I usually found a gasket and bolts with copper gaskets on the M38A1(Nekaf).
The manual ORD9 SNL G-758 says:
page 143, 1 pcs. Gasket, starter # 8328141, WO-804396.
page 143, 2 pcs. Gasket, cop, 0.510 "ID, 13/16" OD, 1/32 "thk.
(starter to bellhousing) # 5214539, WO-637 604.

My point as well. To Nic to be correct for a perfect restoration yes the gasket and crushwashers belong there but their sole purpose is waterproofing for submerging the jeep and if submerging is not intended and a perfect for high points restoration is not the goal then they are not necessary.

The starter will function perfectly without them.
