Just picked up my M38A1 last night, arrived by barge from Vancouver Island to the Queen Charlotte Islands in the middle of the night. Got her home, no death wobble or anything... Seems to me, US M38A1's are not very common in Canada. This one is serial number 4023, Dod 2/53. Runs great, but it does have some rust issues. Mechanically it is almost 100% stock. It seems to have a few Canadian parts, like the engine. Has a Canadian rebuild tag on it. Makes you wonder how it ended up here.

the 40,000 range is correct for a 2/53 M38A1 serial number. What is your last (5th) digit?
