Hi all...
I have been taking my battery box apart to put it back to GI and after I removed the home made tray and two huge batteries and cleaned the box I found that it is coated in something that is black and rubberized.
There a couple places that need to be touched up where it has peeled anyone no what that stuff is and where to get it? Anyone have the rubber tubes and the tee for the drain or know who might? Anyone know a good replacement battery for the 2HN thats easy to buy on the street from a civilian battery company like Deka or interstate?
Thanks again

Dave all of your questions have come up here dozens of times and a quick search of the older posts will yield most of them.
1-There are many acid resistance black battery box paints and there is no way short of chemical analysis to ID what the old stuff in your box is. The best thing to do is go to your local auto paint supply house and ask what they have for battery resistant tray and box paint.
Hi Wes yes I do remember that post and I did use POR 15 in another Jeep and it is poorly suited to battery or even engine components.
I used it all over my GPW as well and it is a good sealer as primer goes but it is not sulfuric or heat proof. The stuff in my 62 M170's battery box is more like smooth Line X bed liner. I called around to a few friends with Mutts today and they are still getting dry charged 2HN's and I found a couple for $50 each in boxes dated 2010 an hour away from home in Salinas at the Exide dealership so that problem is solved. I have them charging now. The dealer gave me two bottles of electrolyte and told me how to charge them.
John Bizal has all the parts for the battery trays and is looking into making all the hoses and the tee. So most of that is solved.
This should get my M170 rolling again.
I will read as you say and try not to post questions. Like everyone else I am trying to get ready for the spring swap meets and I get in a hurry and hate spending hours reading forums when I could be working on my junk trying to keep it rolling. sorry for the repetitive questions.
I would not have got the wiring harness if I did not ask! And that gets me a long way towards rolling and doing it a lot safer. Thanks Ryan.
My comments are not intended to preclude anyone asking questions. I simply am pointing out the info is there for the looking already and I hope everyone places the same value on other people's time that they place on their own time.
Did you contact John recently. Last summer he was opposed to tooling up for those drain hose and metal tube parts as too expensive to be profitable. _________________ Wes K

Hi Wes...
I understand you were only pointing out that my questions were repetitive.
And I apologize to everyone here for that. Sorry.
I read a bunch last night and will continue as much as possible this next week
Until I get caught up.
I spoke to John two weeks back and he said he would look into it.
I usually ask John first I like his work it is top notch in my book.
John reproduced the ammo cans for my WC-55 and they are beautiful.
That said if John says he has to much on his plate or it is cost prohibitive then there are others that can be approached to make them. My hope is that because my M170 is 97% original and completely rust free is to keep it stock only repairing what is missing or broke or needs cleaning and paint.
I spoke with a friend after your idea of having my coating anylized and I am going to take him a sample to take to work. Good idea. My guess after lifting a big piece off and looking at it is that it is rubberized under coating.its flexible. _________________ Thanks

If you google "battery acid proof paint or coatings" several choices specific to that purpose come up. Eastwood has always been very helpful with classic resto needs. _________________ Wes K

The undercoating on USMC vehicles is exactly that... old fashioned undercoating.
Ziebart and other generic brands will work. I have original undercoating on all the USMC vehicles I own and it appears both brushed and sprayed. Nothing special about it.
To be period correct though do not use Por-15 products or urethane based truck bed liner coatings. Chemically, the original coating would probably be rubber based.
Though now over priced 2hn's are readily available from Deka.
