Would the rear turn signals function if the brake switch is gone? I looked through the M151 TM but can't really tell...

Thanks
Warren

They should.

Here's the troubleshooting guide for the late style transistorized turn signals :

Thanks Wes... That's the sections I looked at... Pouring rain so I can't go look yet... I was hoping "no" because everything else works... BO's, lights, just the rear turn signals and the brake lights not working...

In order of 'most common' fault -

1 - bad/missing ground wire for rear assemblies

2 - bad bulbs

( IMHO )

Thanks I don't think its the bulbs (or at least I hope not as I won't be getting those rear light casings open without a lot of drilling and tapping) and I don't think its the grounds as every other light works, including the front signals. Just the stop and rear turn.

This all started because "something" happened to the column turn signal switch. It started going funky on a drive to the store the other day. No left, the alternator (this is a CDN2 with a 60 AMP alternator) was "resetting" (gauge going to 0 then back to normal every few seconds). After unplugging everything by the side of the road I found that the "resetting" stopped with the switch disconnected. I replaced it yesterday and now we are here...

I guess I will have to unravel the wiring and see if something burned through...

The main light switch has a built in circuit breaker. If your rear lights have a short anywhere between the main light switch (thru the turn switch) to the rear lamps you will get your symptoms as the internal circuit breakers loads, opens and then automatically resets.

A short in wire # 20, 21, 22, 23, 467, or 75 can cause the constant open and closing of the circuit breaker seen above just a 1/2" to the right of the "N".

The best way to check all the mentioned circuits for shorts is to disconnect the plug on the main light switch and remove all the rear lamp bulbs and using a digital ohm meter or continuity checker check each wire to jeeps ground for continuity. It's easier to use the pins of the plug to do this.

I will bet you will find severely corroded housing internals on rear laight assemblies as at least part of your problem.

Thanks Wes...

Found one wire that may have shorted and replaced it but it was the one that ran to the little BO marker (not the main 3 bulb unit) on the rear passenger side. I striped two screws and broke two 1251 bulbs getting the housings open. Only the drivers side BO bulb was corroded in place (one of the ones that broke).

Tested the brake switch with the wiring disconnected... Continuity with pedal depressed and not... So bad... But I would have thought the brake lights woul be on solidly...

Haven't taken the switch out to test but I suspect it is defective based on the above...

So hand signals until I get new switchs (both brake and light ( in case I bugger it up))...

Consider modernization of your jeep with the late model modern main light switch which is a plug in.

Looked at those... Significant price differential though Sad

Going to try to find a CHEAP spare before fooling with the light switch because it works except for the brake and turn...

Pretty much going to baffle people with hand signals I think Smile

And thanks again for all the pointers...

Hello Warren,
Sounds like you have the turn signal configuration with two left real lights, and one small marker on the right rear for BO brake light.

I would really appreciate a photo of how that little lamp is mounted and where.

Thanks!
Brian

Why not just open my photo album and on page 2 view the Sub-Album titled Turn Signal Systems.

Good gravy.

I could have sworn I just looked through there.........

Thank you Wes.

Again.

BTW, just received that temp gauge from Fitz.
Looks brand spanking new. No markings other than the number under the pointer.
