I just noticed this weekend - for the first time - that the rear bumper on my M38A1 is not centered. It extends all the way to the corner on the left side of the tub and only to the side panel seam on the right side of the tub.

Is this normal? Or, do I have a homemade bumper? If it is normal, what is the purpose for the bumper being offset?

Steve, I don't have an answer as to why but I can tell you that
that my M38 is the same way and its definitely factory. Perhaps
its a holdover from the CJ driver side license plate mount detail. See
pg 134 of R. Millers M38 reference guide for photo.

Steve,
You are describing the way the rear bumper is on my M38A1.

The rear cross member is extended slightly on the left side for license plate mounting. This rear cross member was also used on the M38, CJ3A, CJ3B and CJ5.

Crossmember! Of course! I'm such a dork. Smile

Thanks for all the responses. At least, I know my MV is still original.
