Hi all help needed I have recently purchased a m38a1 so owning a jeep is very new to me , I''m have a problem getting my jeep started I am a bit unsure were to start to try and get it sorted , from cold it takes 10/12 turn overs to get it started when it''s warm after about hour restarting it fires up no problems, not sure if it''s a fuel or ignition problem or just me get my cold starting procedure wrong and flooding the carb , any one who could point me in the right direction were to start would be appreciated many thanks
Do you have a stock M38A1? Or has someone substituted other than original engine, fuel system and electrical system parts?
Have you reviewed the Operators manual? TM 9-8014 covers all of your questions in great detail. Page 33 covers normal starting. Page 50 covers unusual conditions. Page 79 starts the troubleshooting chapter.
If you do not have this or the many other applicable manuals they can be downloaded in PDF form for free here on our Downloads Page.
The stock M38 and M38A1 use a special water proof carb that has vacuum operated accelerator pump and metering rod. So the common choke, pump the gas pedal and crank way of starting seldom works with these jeeps. _________________ Wes K

The best way my M38A1 starts is invariably...Choke all lthe way out..gas pedal fully depressed( not difficult with floor starter) turn over 3-4 revolutions(get gas up to carb)..as soon as starts , off choke and gently rev engine to smooth run. _________________ 1953 M38A1...CFR 53-32475
