Yes, slow steady pressure to lift the needle off. But it sounds like you are already well past that point. |

I haven't done it on an AC speedometer but I have done it on a SW tachometer. The trick there wasn't in the removal but in the install. Can't put pressure on the shaft while pressing the needle back ... |

Since the self-tapping screws to mount the rail will carry the load in shear and not tension I can see there is little risk of them pulling out even with tight canvas. |
