In the recent MVM in the MUTT article the author stated that the M151 series had a longer mikitary life span than the Jeep series.
I thought that the MC used m38a1s into the 70s. As I count that makes over 30 years. 41-7#.
He claimed the mutt served alongside the HMMWV in the 91 gulf war. I know for a fact that special ops used a few in 91 but I have never heard of them in regular service in the gulf war. As I have been told I think Panama was the last engagement the Mutt saw regular service in.
I have nothing against mutts and may get one some day, but I think the author is wrong.
I have seen a mutt or two hanging around MCAS miramar in squadron service. I have pics of it. It looks like it was left over from the Navy as Miramar was NAS before the late 90s. But thats not regular service.

Rich,
He is incorrect if he is using 1991 as a benchmark for the M151. 1959 thru 1991 = 32 years. The last M38A1 I saw show up at our DRMO in Ellsworth AFB SD before I retired was 1988 and that gives the M38A1 a military lifespan of at least 1952 thru 1988 = 36 years.

Ya no kiddin, I thought he was off, wow I didnt know the AF had A1s hanging around that long.
If all jeeps are included the Jeep has had a much longer military life than the mutt, but that may change, there are a few thousand out there stored at barstow im told. The mutt may still be around but its not in regular service. A few special ops in 1991 doesnt count in my book. He also claimed that mutts are in service more elsware in the world than jeeps, I think hes wrong there too.
Long live the Jeep.

When you expose both the M38A1 and the M151 to the elements (especially salt air and water) the A1 will outlive the 151 or at least you'll still have a A1 frame when the 151 unitized floor pan and structural base is junk.
