i wanted a clean, easy to change and original looking air filter. i pulled the hershey oil bath element and added a wix#46234 canister type paper filter in it's place. had to mill a round plate to cover the open end of the paper filter, added a center hole in the plate for the wing bolt and it fits hidden inside the canister. sweet!!clean and easy to change will probably get me to change it more often. i'd post a pic if i knew how. rick

actually, wes, i am putting it on a '51 m-38. it's still undergoing resto so i havent run it yet. i have done similar oil bath conversions on antq tractors in the past and it worked fine. the goal is to provide a clean, readilly changable filter in the original canister. i hate spilling dirty oil on a clean motor..

The link you can't find is the Bob Notman link. He did the conversion with an off the shelf paper filter about 8 years ago.

ERIK, I LIKE IT..YOU DONT NEED THE WINGNUT AND BOTTOM PLASTIC PLATE AS IN MY METHOD. SNAPPING ON THE BOTTOM HOUSING PLATE WILL SEAL THE FILTER BOTTOM, CORRECT?? VERY CLEAN!! RICK

I have not had my filter apart yet. I removed it from my Jeep and it is still sitting in the same bucket full of the same oil, 4 years later. I should probably clean it out. I am guessing that it is important to keep the filter pressed against the top of the housing.

Gentlemen: I hope you do not ming me asking but what is the point of modifying the oil bath air filter system? Its on a historic military vehicle. Unless you use it as a daily driver or operate it in detrimental enviroments (but then that filter is the best one for that) I think the TM says every 6 months or 6000 miles wich would be for normal operations. Ive had my M38 since 1997 and I use it a lot by my reconing and I sure do not rack up that kind of mileage. I check the air filter each time I change the engine oil and based on that result do what is necessary. We certainly do not have paper filters now because they are more efficient. Its only to support the OEM and the parts companies. Smile

Hi Steve,
I use my vehicle as a back up to my bicycle here in Brooklyn.
-Does it receive daily use? not really.
-does it drive in detrimental environments? does that include potholes?
-do I like supporting big oem parts companies? who does?
-
-Do I like getting oil all over my fender, floor, SW Heater and pay
$4.00 for the quart of oil
$5.00 mineral spirits
$1.00 for rag (est. by wife when cleaned=labor)
$ utilitity cost to run compressor
etc, etc? no.
-Do I accept that the a better flowing air element would contribute to a better running f banger? yes
-Would I like a low buck, re-usable, cleanable element that will perform such a task as to filter particulates and not contribute anymore un-necessary fluid(oil) waste? sure. Very Happy
