Just got through spraying the first coat of Gillespie primer Red Oxide III. Started with the Rapco thinning recommendation of 4 to 1 paint to thinner and used Xylene. First sprays were running quite a bit using an regular spray gun at 45 psi. tip pressure. I refferred to my HVLP viscosity guide on primers and it reccommended a 30 second viscosity drip which was considerably thicker than the 4:1 thinning. The spray went on with excellent results and no runs or orange peel using the viscosity recommendation for the HVLP sprayer. I remember seeing another post where someone sprayed right out of the can without thinning but I don't remember where I saw it. My questions are: has anyone else experienced this and, more importantly, is this going to be true with the finish coat of AJP late WW II OD?

Ive been shooting all my Rapco paint and primer approx 4:1 (depending on the temp) with a 1.5mm tip no problems. This is with Xylene also. I had maybe 5 minor runs this whole time but that was because I was either spraying to close or to long at one spot. Multiple thin coats are key.

When I spray the Gillespie AJP late paint, I use 2:1 with synthetic enamel reducer and 8:1 synthetic enamel hardner with HVLP gun set at gun's recommended pressure. Have painted two M38s and two M100s with great results. Dry in 1 hour and stenciling in 48 hours - Sonny

Sonny,
Does the paint flow really good that thin? I may have to give that a try in going a little thinner for my 1st coats.

Sonny,
Can you give me a product part number for the sythetic enamel reducer? The guys at NAPA don't seem to have that on their computers.

Dupont 3812s or OMNI MR186. The Dupont was fast drying, The Omni was medium. The Omni came from my Napa store ,Dupont from Car Quest.

Napa no longer sells Dupont, find a store that does and you are good to go. My Napa guy found me some in a different brand,I can get it tommorrow for you ,if you want.

The synthetic reducer I referred to is NAPA's Synthol 8004. My local NAPA dealer orders it from their paint store. In this ratio, it sprays great with HVLP - no orange peel and I've never had a run - Sonny
