I see a posting by a new member with a 52 M38 ser# 59697 My 52 is # 59148-----498 earlier! If they made 60,000 in 2 years, 5 day week, that would be 115 jeeps a day. That makes them 4 days apart. Anybody seen closer numbers?

One of my M170's is serial # 11870. I found someone who has 11869 with the same delivery date. Since they only made 4000 to 5000 of these that is unusual.

M38 production rates varied widely. Sep to Dec 1950 yielded only about 3000 thousand M38's.

Around June last year, MC-26097 was advertised for sale here in the UK.

Mine was bought in the UK, and is MC-26057 (40 numbers apart). Maybe a batch of M38's got shipped over here when the corresponding arm of service operated on the shores (mine was apparently US Air Force).

I wonder if any more of the UK-based M38's have serial numbers close to these??

Owen.

It was very common for a unit to receive their new jeeps in serial # sequence. When a unit rotated to Europe their equipement went with them. In later years they stop rotating equipment with units and simply transferred ownership to the new arriving unit.

I had 2 M38 that were consecutive serial numbers back in 2004. One came from New Hampshire one from Connecticut. I would have to do a search to remember the serial numbers, but maybe some of these guys remember that? Shawn

Mine has a date of 3/52 and a serial of 059383. Hood numbers are 20908291. This was one of three my grandfather bought from the Army off of Rough and Ready island in California. Paid 800 a piece, what a steal.
