I've replaced the rear main bearing seal twice and cannot stop the leak.

I take off the bottom half of the main bearing and lossen the other two bearings. Then I push out the top half of the seal. I have a lot of resistance when pushing the new top half around the shaft but can get it in place. Then I have a LOT of trouble getting the bottom bearing half up into place with the two rubber rods. Now after a couple of miles drive I still have almost a table spoon of oil run out of the bell housing. What am I missing?

Bill,
The time you spent doing that job twice is more time then it would take to pull the engine, roll it upside down and do a real top notch job of it. By not removing the flywheel and closely inspecting the rear of the block you are not able to ascertain wether your oil leak is from the rear main cap or the rear cam journal plug. Save yourself a ton of future grief and PULL the engine out where a quality job is much easier to do.

Thanks for the tip. I'll pull the engine. I think there was a little lazyness in me for not pulling it to begin with.

While she's on the engine stand you can take advantage of the situation and iget her cleaned up and do a little inspecting and preventative maintenance. Smile
