Hi all. I am considering repainting my '51 M38 and am interested in the "Follow Me" paint schemes. I've seen photos of the WWII era jeeps painted for this purpose but none for the later M38. In addition to posting on G503 I would like to ask this group if anyone has photos or links to photos of jeeps from this era in checkerboards. I would be interested specifically to know if these vehicles were painted top to bottom or just top surfaces, and if interiors were left OD (or blue).

Thanks for any info,

Mark W.

The USAAC used the checkered black/whites and plain OD units with a checkered flag. This continued into the early 50's with checkered yellow/black then all yellow and finally by the late 50's whatever vehicle was available in it's basic Strata Blue (or OD if the theater of operations dictated it) using a metal sign about 3 ft by 5 ft that had follow me in red letters on a white background and sometimes one or two orange/white checkered flags. I have played the "follow me" truck many times while in the USAF from 1966 thru 89. The job though usually fell to the unit's Transient Alert branch (these guys handled non-assigned aircraft passing thru) or Base Flight (these guys handled the base's hack aircraft which were not used in the base's primary mission).

This is one of my favorite "Follow Me" signs.
