I got the correct shifter boot for my A1 and there is something funny going on with the way it fits over the pan. I went to put the pan back on to test the fit and when I line the pan up with the bolt holes there is a space on the left side between the pan and the boot. Check this out:
I'm scratching my head now . . . Any ideas?

It looks like you have a civvy metal cover that has the larger hole where the different boot and retainer bolt to the top of the pan. The M38 pan does not have the four bolt holes for the boot retainer and the edge of the boot hole is rolled over more.
Also the M38 boot was never meant to seal snugly to the hole in the pan. It's only purpose was to keep water out of the tranny.
Also you may have your crossmember/trany shifted a bit too far right. _________________ Wes K

Im pretty sure its the correct cover. Those holes you see were from the PO trying to use a civvy boot. He'd put a piece of plywood under the boot to try to get it up high enough to clear it and there were self tapping screws tgrough the plywood into the cover.
Honestly not sure about the crossmember, I'll look it up. I'll see if i can find the dimensions of the hole too just to be sure.
I've trash bag over it for now to keep the water out until i get time to go mess with it more. _________________ Casey M38A1
The civvy CJ's use the boot fastened to the pan to act as an umbrella to keep water from getting down the shift cane and into the tranny. The M38 required a better seal due to it's deep water fording spec. The tranny top itself differs from the CJ tranny top. The cane on the m38 is sealed by clamping it's boot to the cane support riser and the cane itself. The Army didn't care if water rained down on the boot, through the gap between the boot and the metal pan and onto the tranny since it had the tower to cane sealed tightly with boot & clamps.
It is also possible your tub has shifted to the right with aging of the hat channels, bolts and rubber pads. _________________ Wes K

Correct, but I don't see the large bottom clamp in your new boot photo? When you do get the large clamp installed note that you can force the boot's lower edge tighter against the cover pan. _________________ Wes K

I havent put it on yet because the offset had me scratching my head. When i pushed the boot down to see what it would look like against the pan is when i noticed the gap. _________________ Casey M38A1
