Do the Canadian built m38a1s have data plates on the passenger side dash? I found a jeep I am thinking about buying but it has no VIN plate on the wheel well and no data plates. but it does have a tag riveted to the glove box lid with some numbers and CDN stamped to it. would this be a Canadian jeep? also, what is the value of a complete project jeep like this that runs but does not drive. has severe tub damage (possible roll-over) but has original 24V system.

My BAD. I read m38 the first time. Corrected this to M38A1CDN series. The M38A1CDN series dash plate set is very similar to the US Built M38 except for the 3 lower plates. The US Procurement & responsible agency plate is not used and data on the serial plate is Canadian Army specific.

M38A1CDN serial plate

M38A1CDN2 serial plate. Note this jeep was produced by Kaiser Jeep of Canada at Windsor.

M38A1CDN3 serial plate. Note: this jeep was built by Kaiser Jeep in Toledo OH.

Also the M38CDN's had their CAR # on the top of the left front frame rail:

Asking someone to offer you a value appraisal of a jeep that you have no photos of and only describe with 2 sentences won't yield any accurate appraisals. What you describe so briefly may be worth anywhere from $300 to $1500 US dollars. Organize a good series of photos showing great detail of damaged areas and the underside of the jeep on a web site then attach them here on your post or show the URL for their location so we can go to the host site and review them. Make sure you include full view photos of all four sides, the dash and the engine compartment.

Jason, You did not mention the year of your M38A1. If it is a 1953 then there is no serial plate on the right wheel well. If a CDN2 (1967-6Cool or a CDN3 (1970-71) then there should be a serial plate on the wheel well in addition to the dashboard serial plate. What does your ownership say? Does it match the serial number that is on the plate added to the glovebox? More info from you is required for a good answer. Maybe a new VIN was assigned to your jeep when it was registered and this should match the ownership. For American readers: vehicles in Canada do not have titles, just provincial vehicle registrations...... Brian

Brian, That brings up an interesting question. If they have provincial Registrations only then I presume that all sales of the jeep must be done with a bill of sale?

hello. been a while since I was on. in answer to your question, Wes, all that's required is a bill of sale and the previous owners old registration.

I will add to this. Any vehicle (in Ontario Canada anyways) that is over 20 years old needs both a bill of sale with ownership and a vehicle appraisal. An appraisal is easy to do here. I simply went to a shop that does appraisals and he asked me a few questions and I showed him some pictures of my M38. He then filled out a form for me and I was off to the Ministry to change ownership. The appraisal cost me $100.

And he never physically saw the vehicle?

Nope. It's literally for the Ministry of Transport to determine taxes on the used vehicle.
I will also need to get it appraised before I insure it. He doesn't need to see that either. I can tell him it's worth $1000 or tell him it's worth 25000. It's such a scam.

then a trip to motor vehicle in Qc and explain what it was since there no VIN # and that it I got what call a classic vehicle plate ( cheaper ) and off I went .
