I have a '52 M38a1. The steering system has been upgraded to a shaft-u-joint-shaft-u-joint shaft -gear box. I have no problem with all of that. The steering shaft from the steering wheel to the first u-joint is 36" with a 2" spline. The dia. is 3/4". But the shaft does not connect to the steering wheel. My thinking is that the splines are too worn on the wheel which is fine. My question is, is the inside diameter of the wheel supposed to be exactly 3/4"? If so, I'll just order a new wheel. I just need some kind of verification please from someone.

Second question concerning the column. Inside the column there is a bearing then a spring and is there supposed to be another bearing at the top of the column over the spring before I put the steering wheel on?

Since you are not using the stock Ross gearbox and column we can't help much without knowing what vehicle's steering gear box, shafts and column you have. Most steering upgrades to pre 1972 jeeps entail the installation of the Saginaw steering system.

So, what I have is a Saginaw Steering box. 314 6723 63. I tried to research this serial number but was unable to do so. I have a short shaft coming out of the box to a U-Joint. From there I have another 3/4" shaft to the second U-Joint then a 7/8" (36" long) shaft which is my steering shaft to the wheel. The shaft is a 7/8" tube 36"long. At the end is the spline and threads which are all chewed up. What I'm looking for is just to replace the 7/8" tube shaft.

Can you just run a thread chaser over the bad threads?

A photo would help.

Our web site concerns primarily stock restorations of only 1950 to 1971 Willys/Kaiser military jeeps so most jeeps here have only their original Ross gear boxes. There are a few of us that have modified jeeps but not many. Folks that do a lot of Saginaw steering work on their jeeps are the 72 and newer CJ5 page folks. http://web.archive.org/web/20101017025909/http://www.earlycj5.com/technical/
Here's a steering discussion page there: http://web.archive.org/web/20101002062102/http://www.earlycj5.com/technical/steering/

As mentioned above it always helps to post pictures that help illustrate your issue. Especially true if you are discussing non-stock jeep parts.

Saginaw has produce thousands of steering gear types over the last half century, both manual and power. Even when you use an available box ID manual it only ID's the box and may lead you to a make or model group to try and locate the actual steering column and drive shafts which will differ from chassis to chassis.

Here's a link to one such box ID manual: http://bestindustrial.com/_pdffiles/CD%20Acrobat%20Files/BAB%20HD%20Identification%20Manuals/BAB%20Gear%20ID%20Manual.pdf

Once you pin point the box model then you will have to spend hours searching through various factory parts/repair manuals in those make/models and year groups that that model Saginaw box was installed in.

Searching jeep web board discussions may yield topics like these:

http://web.archive.org/web/20101002062107/http://www.earlycj5.com/technical/steering/converting_to_saginaw_steerin/

Or some rebuilder catalog pages:

I can't get this picture thing to work. I was able to get the pictures (two) to a photo gallery, but unable to get them to the post. I'll find another way of getting this done. I'll order a new one with the worm, cut both and weld the two together. Sorry for the picture snafu. [/img]

O,K. Last question. Does anybody know the diameter of the steering shaft for a Willys Jeep? I'm going to buy one. Then I'll cut it in half and cut in half the shaft I have now since the lower end inserts into a 7/8" U-Joint. And I need the top part for the steering wheel. I just want to make sure I order the correct size. Or the part number of the shaft with the splines would be great.

Thanks;

Larry

Have you looked at the parts manual? The M38A1 Parts manual is free for you to download and use here on our website's downloads page:
http://www.willysmjeeps.com/v2/modules.php?name=Downloads&d_op=getit&lid=87

The part number of the shaft is 8329730 , it is item R in this illustration.

The nut is item "Z" and it's part number and size is on page 260 of the ORD 9 parts manual.

Everything makes sense. My jeep has several modifications. The steering system is one of them. I am ordering a 7/8" spline repair kit. (805123) This will be attached, i.e. welded onto my existing shaft. Everything else fits. Thanks for the help. I do appreciate it. -G
