Q. Ive currently got the sump pan off for cleaning and repainting . Looking at the oil strainer thats dangling ...(the pancake thing )....does it need periodic cleaning .....rinsing in gasoline or something ? cant find it in the maintenance schedule .Is there any form of seal in the pivot joint such as may influence oil pressure if its not working correctly ?

The oil pickup is the first level of protection from foreign object ingestion into the oil system so by all means whenever you have access to it you should clean it. The strainer (lower part ) is retained with a cotter pin to the upper part, Support Tube. The support tube is bolted to the block with two fasteners and a gasket.. It is meant to be slightly flexible. Only gasket is at the very top of the support tube.
