I had to replace the thermostat and after removing the housing I was looking inside the water passage of the head and noticed there were two stiff pieces of wire in there so I am curious what they are for.

I do not recall seeing anything inside the head and below the thermostat and it's mounting sleeve. You may be seeing remnants of a spring from somewhere else in the engine or is it possible you are seeing the casting flashings that resemble a bead or strip of wire tight against the inside casting of the head?

They are not springs or flashings they are two pieces of roughly 1/16'' straight wire protruding from the water passage. I reached into the head and got ahold of them with my needle nose pliers and gave them a tug but they would not move. I could have pulled harder but I did not want to damage them until I found out if they belonged there or not.

Castings such as a block are made up of several sand cores wired together into a single mold. After the iron is poured and cools, the sand is broken out leaving water jackets, cylinder bores and such. The wires stay behind. They do nothing and hurt nothing being in there.
