Found out about my gasket. I have been given the same one as on Kaiser Willys site for 41 to 71 Jeeps inc M38 with the rear cut outs.

The one in the TM9-1804A gives WO- 639980 with no rear cut outs.

Will start off with the correct gasket, thanks for telling me about this, must be a few dealers which do not know this.

Got the gasket sorted out no holes for the rubber caps.
Mine has a tight packed fabric or some sort of rope for the rear bearing cap packing vertical sections.

Anyway got everything flat and clean and put the gasket on with Permatex on pan side only, then gently put the fixing back in.

Left over night and checked fixings still hand tight, oil in and start up.

Run the engine and taken on the drive way, still okay.

See how it goes over the next days, but no runs out yet.

The original rear seal for the M38 engine is a rope seal.

Careful here. Both the old style rope seal kit and the new styled pre-formed seal kit used the same two pieces of straight rubber for the vertical seal on the lower rear main cap.

Thank you, the last man in put some sort of tightly packed fibre on the vertical parts.

I have put it back together and so far so good, but I feel I will be back again as the correct parts are not fitted by the previous builder.

Time will tell.
