I have been trying to get my M38 road worthy but have had a constant, pretty heavy transfer case leak. Initially it was coming from the rear transfer case cover and I seem to have fixed that by taking a slight bow out of the cover and replacing the gasket and sealant.
The leak continued although not as bad but still a pretty good puddle and it was oriented more to the right side than the center as it had been. I could find no signs of leak except at the rear and finally decided that I needed to redo the rear cap and shims etc.
This morning I pulled the parking brake assembly and there was no sign of leakage around the seal or the splines on the yoke and I didn't see anything obvious around the cap. When I took off the speedometer cable I noticed oil on the inside lower frame rail. After removing the cable I noticed transmission oil leaking out of it from a slight cut in the outer shielding.
I guess my question is, does enough transmission fluid get forced through the cable to cause a fairly noticeable leak?
I also looked in the ord-9 and noticed a listing for gaskets for both ends of the speedometer cable
RG, They are flat rubber washers or gaskets. The sheath nuts require no sealing. Those flat rubber washers seal the sheath tube flared end inside the cap with the threaded boss on the transfer case and the back of the speedometer, Here's their detailed spec's.

Charlesfitton,
I checked the vent before I pulled it apart but I am going to pull it again and re-check it. I have purchased a new speedometer cable and housing to install.
Wes.
Thanks. I think your decimal measurements work out to the fractional ones in the manual. My old cable housing had them but they didn't look real good which is why I looked them up. I pulled one out of the new cable housing and observed that it is not an o-ring but a washer. Thanks for looking up the additional info.
I have a new bearing cap due to damage on the old one and the new cable and housing and hope this stuff will fix my leak issues.
