Keats,
Towards the end of their use by the military in the 80's or so they only came with the Mil spec PN on them. The Mil Spec # was all inclusive of all brands produced that matched the specifications requirements. So if you ordered an MS35911-2 from base supply the part in the package could easily be any of the following from the chart I posted above: Autolite BR4S 0r 2222, AC# SR84E, Champion # 572 or XED14.
Don,
Yes, you were sent the incorrect plugs.
Yes, 2245 is an allowable sub for 2243. _________________ Wes K

You saved me cash and maybe a screwed up engine down the road. This honest mistake was an example of how complicated some M38 issues can be.
Threads from years past chronicle how the supply of 2243 plugs went from ‘a little hard to find’ to ZIP..... with prices climbing from a few bucks to big bucks per plug. The other older plugs used to replace the 2243 are also mostly gone.
Again, thanks. Don _________________ Don Alvarez

It would be nice to have four Mil Spec# MS35909-1 spark plugs but the Autolite 2243 and its discontinued cousins are gone ..... or mostly gone unless you want to pay several hundred bucks for a set.
Oh, well.
I’m thinking 27 chipmunks in a wire cage wheel should get me up to golf cart speed...... no hills. 🐿 x27 = 😁 _________________ Don Alvarez

Pretty sure the average Joe looking at them won't be able to tell the difference.
My spare RMC motor came with 4 used 2243 plugs. I'm going to clean them up and put them in a show and tell display case. I might get them gold-plated first. _________________ Ron D.

Don,
From the "One Thing Leads to Another" Department.
Have you checked out how expensive a set of waterproof spark plug wires are? _________________ Ron D.

Bought a repo set some time ago. Went by the ad description.
About $140..... will go back and double check what I purchased.
My biggest future concerns are the Voltage Regulator and Generator. They look great from the outside but have not been tested.
I bought the refurb ‘late’ starter which looks great but, again, not tested.
Weird. Costs are becoming less important than making correct choices. I have a bunch of unfinished sub projects, waiting for a better understanding of what I am doing.
I would kidnap a M Jeep expert and lock him in the barn until the darn thing is reassembled ........but they are scarce in my area and there could be some legal issues. _________________ Don Alvarez

A few years ago I tried to bait Wes into an all-expenses paid trip that would've saved me tons in the long run. Wouldn't even have to get his hands dirty. He wouldn't bite. _________________ Ron D.

If you are looking for M38 Spark Plug Wires--Check out Army Surplus Warehouse. $39.95 plus shipping. They are all the same length but fit and work great!!
XMJ-20 (2247) does look like the ones to the right and Have spec.
This is a good point to Google "Spark Plug Heat Range" and learn the answer to your question. _________________ Wes K

HOT = “possible detonation and damage to the engine”.
Not good.
Apparently:
A MS35909-3 plug may fit in a M38 but it produces excessive ignition/combustion temperatures.
The MS35909-2 (2245) plug was made for the M38A1 but can be run in the M38 as a ‘hotter’ but safe alternative.
Unless some company resurrects production of the 2243 plug, it may eventually be impossible to include this feature in M38 restorations. For now, there is still some availability of the 2245 at high prices..... but then the 2245 is not exactly correct for the M38.
I am left with indecision concerning this needed component. _________________ Don Alvarez

In other words, if you have to ask what it costs, you can't afford it. For us poor folks, that translates as already impossible. Nobody is going to make 2243's anytime soon. John said the tooling is gone === and I believe him.
Dang! Buy the doggone adapters Don! You aren't parking your M38 in a museum every night are you?
And a nice clean NOS set of 2243's in Granny's estate garage sale for $9 each aren't going to surface until you do. Serendipity.
I might want the "HOT" plugs if the ambient temp was 40* below zero. Which isn't likely in Florida with all that global warming going on?

OK. Let’s talk “doing the best we can” which includes those adapters.
But we can also chew the fat on other stuff out there.
My M38 will not need plugs for a while yet.
So.... shall we consider the unwanted child and other abominations?
OMIX 17248.02 Spark Plug for 50-71 Jeep M-38 & M-38A1
Don’t yell at me. Just toss out another choice.

Ok Don,
Wasn't yelling. In my view, in military jeep world, Omix has a fairly consistent and generally recognized reputation for selling off-shore junk vintage jeep parts. I avoid that brand at all costs. To compound the problem, some vendors sell it camouflaged they're so proud of it. Many vendor photos look suspiciously like OMIX photos and the part and packaging is mysteriously without any credible markings. Buy at your own risk. It didn't take me long to learn.
I certainly take no delight in trashing a business. But some deserve the reputation they earn. This is just one man's opinion. Caveat Emptor.
But maybe, just maybe these OMIX spark plugs for $30-$40 each might be different? OMIX might be the Golden Goose and those are really 2243 Golden Eggs? Maybe it was OMIX who saw it coming and stockpiled the genuine thing?
Go ahead, find yourself a vendor or three and call them and ask what the "real" part number is ---- engraved on it (hint: it sure ain't 17248.02) and what part number Autolite it's equivalent to, or where it was made. Bet you get crickets, or a dial tone. Try to find reviews or comments by M38 owners who say they're wonderful. Never seen any of that myself, but could've missed it. Good luck with that. If they're good, I suggest you buy a gross. Price isn't going down anytime soon. Who looks at part numbers anyway?
I have no problem with eating crow or even chewing the fat off one. It's the buzzards I worry about.
For your reading enjoyment, plug "OMIX" into the search button here and the other venerable jeep forums......
Again, I'm not yelling. Perhaps overly excited. No harm or foul intended. My middle name is Richard, but you can call me Dick. _________________ Ron D.

I was joking about the yelling..... should have put a smiley face on that one.
I sort of thought you and others would be unenthusiastic on the repo brands but there may be readers out there who have run these plugs for a while and can offer firsthand info.
There is also the Kaiser Willys plug. Item# 922727A. that would be interesting to hear about. I assume someone buys and uses these plugs and could give us the low down. _________________ Don Alvarez
