Hello all,

I am looking for a picture of what the correct knobs on a 1952 M38 should look like.

Thank you in advance.

Greg

Throttle should be written in horizontal, M38A1 were written in vertical (up and down).

I will check later, but I believe that is correct from my poor memory.

Greg,

Here is a photo from Ben's Jeep.

Top handle is the fording cable and it is similar to the throttle, but no lettering.

Next one down is the Throttle, note the lettering going from left to right instead of up to down.

Last is the round knob, that is the choke with again reading left to right.

Ryan, I believe the A1 reads Horizontal as well. Wink

David,

You are probably right. I should have said replacement throttle cable/handle.

Thanks for the correction! Smile

While flipping through TM9-8012 I came across these two drawings showing a round knob for the throttle cable. As if things aren't confusing enough.

I personnaly am convinced the M38's came with a round knob for the throttle. Every (Yes Every) TM and ORD 9 for the M38 with any photos that include this knob show it to be round. The part numbers are the same in both the 51 and 55 ORD 9's and they both illustrate a round knob. The only place I can find a "T" shaped Throttle knob is in the M38A1 pubs. It has a different part number. Since these controls are easily used on either the M38 or the M38A1 I'd say the Army quit stocking the M38 control 7375115 WO# 801683 and knob WO# 801685 and only stocked the M38A1 "T" type 8329761 WO# 806337 and it's knob WO# 806339. Since these were most plentiful as surplus in the 70's and on they probably found their way onto almost every M38 out there since these controls are used a lot and wear out often.

Personal opinion; I like the "T" handle with throttle on it... Reminds me of the days when I drove the M-35, M-813 and M-25/932. There are some cross country vehicles if handled right. Very Happy

My Throttle cable is a "T" handle on my M-38 CDN...

Hal,
Good thing you specified CDN. The CDN-OM9-804 shows the "T" knob.

After carefully looking through all the photos in the manuals, I think Wes has a very valid point.

It would certainly appear as though a lot of the M38's in the manuals have both round knobs for choke and throttle.

Now was the throttle labeled on the knob?
