most parts should interchange.

Wes is the electrical guy, so he would know for certain.

I think the distributor has a diferent shaft.

The M38A1 entered production in 1952 using all the electrical components the May 1952 and later M38 used. It seems the Army eventually brought most of the earlier M38's up to the same May 52 configuration over the years. The M38 starter used through Feb 52 will not fit the A1. The very early M38 distributor used with the firewall mounted noise filter will not work without modifications on the A1. The A1 did not use the 4 circuit breakers found on early M38's. The A1 did not use the very early M38 plastic headlamp bulbs but they will fit the A1.

The A1 saw the introduction of several improvements in electrical components over it's life and most can be retrofitted to the M38. The late style horns, transistorized voltage regulator, volt meter (replacing ammeter) and the higher amperage alternator systems are a few examples.

In their attempts to insure an uninterrupted supply system the Army contracted with different manufacturers to make compatible components. The Delco Remy parts will also interchange IE the Delco regulator and generator can be used as a set or mix and match with Autolite.
