when i picked up the parts jeep it came with spare frame axles and spring front axle had a sprocket on it what is it for

bubba strikes again is my guess. There should be a dust shield behind the yoke and it's base is fairly thick so my guess is he needed a spacer and that is what he had.

i don't buy that that sprocket was welded on the yoke for some reason it looks factory it is a dana 25 my not be military

....do the hubs on the axle have fixed or manually changed lock-outs? I could see if they were free-wheeling that something chain driven could have been run off the impeller shaft.....just don't know what.

Could be someone used the axle to power something and drove the axle with a chain from the power source. There are hundreds of possibilities but the odds of nailing it down are slim.
