I have pretty much figured out between all the holes in the body which ones should be there and which ones should not mostly by looking at Ryan's wonderful large pictures in his gallery (THANKS!) I have gone over and painted all the factory ones with white paint. Luckily the prev owner didn't weld fill anything and only bondo filled the holes. There are few here that I am not sure about though or what they are used for, can you help. As you can see there are a ton I have to weld up, 60 to be exact! How about all those colors!
Thanks.

1. It has been plugged up but is still visible of its location. Ive seen pics of Ryan's that has a bolt there maybe holding something inside the fender?
2. As with #1 there is a bolt there in Ryan's pictures and maybe holding something inside fender?
3. Seen a few pics with a bolt there but nothing on the outside, maybe on the inside again?
4. Another with a bolt on the exterior in pics but nothing being held on the exterior. Inside?
5. A group of 4 holes in the step. I can't find any pics to support that there should be anything there and assume they aren't supposed to be there but want to make sure.
6. Whats are these for? There is a factory square nut welded on the backside of this one. There is another one about 10.5" above and 1" aft of this one that didn't make it in the picture, also with a square nut behind it. They aren't the shovel mount or that rope channel mount if that is what it called. Ryan has these holes in his pic but no bolts.

Thanks Wes. As you can see in Ryans pics on the holes I circuled, I have the same holes on my tub as your pic also does.. I notice in your pics you have them X'd out. I have come to the conclusion that with 3 tubs now showing the same holes in those locations that they are supposed to be there. But for what?
I also see that in your pics that there are the 4 holes on the passenger side step. I can't make out the text that you added though.

The three right side holes you are concerned with I believe are field added during kit installations. The two vertical ahead of the door rope strip are for the Arctic top windshield and the single hole near the door sill is for the radio harness clamp. The two vertical holes on the left rear quarter are for the stone deflector panel inside that protects the wire harness at the trailer plug area. The 4 holes on the passenger side step are for the Arctic powerplant heater kit fuel pump. These holes were not on the early steps but did appear in later production.

Those photos you posted by Ryan are not meant to be representative of all hole nomenclatures and for ID'g correct holes. He has those illustrations with all holes labeled in the M38 restoration guide he published.

Thanks for the info Wes. I figured the single hole next to the door hinge mount might have something to do with a wire harness. I find it odd that other 2 holes on the passenger side that you say are for an artctic top dont show up on the drivers side also. I'm torn on if I should fill these up or not including the set of 4 holes on the step as I never see me adding this equipment. Suppose I could, as the prev owner did and body fill them close instead of weld. Does anyone have a picture of this stone guard for the drivers inner fender?

Ah, thanks Rick. I guess I will look for the 2 holes on the inside of the tub now.

I had a hole like that listed as #3. I think it had a ground wire from the trailer harness. May be an modification done later. I'll have to pull the trailer plug out to be sure.

I know this is an old post but I'm looking at holes in my
tub. I believe the top and bottom holes forward of the
rope channel and aft of the shovel bracket are for the fording
tube brace clamps. They have nuts welded behind the hole.

Can anyone suggest the use for three holes on the driver side
in a similar location? No nuts behind these guys. Any chance one
might be for the fuel vent or primer line clamp?

Thanks,
Brian

As Wes said in his earlier post, arctic top windshield. It has straight legs instead of curved like the normal windshield.

The three vertical 7/16" holes on each side of the cowl parallel to the dash and a bit forward of it are detailed on page 7 of TM 9-2855-4 Arctic Top Installation. They were not original from Willys.

I do not have three vertical holes lined up
on either side of the cowl. On the left I have the
hole for the wiper line, two holes for the rope channel,
holes for the mirror bracket, and one small hole below
the windshield bracket, and two small
holes maybe an inch apart nearby.

On the right I have the wiper line hole,
tge shovel bracket holes,
two holes with nuts for the fording brackets,
two holes for the rope channel, and the hole
for the radio cable bracket.

There were several small holes left from
removing snaps for a civvy top.

I was wondering if there was a bracket or
clip that held the fuel vent line to the cowl.

Mysteries abound on old vehicles, and seem moreso
on these old hammers.

Thanks for all of the pics.
