I have a 2/52 M38 and was starting to work on cleaning up the under side of the hood when I found some very old stensil markings. My serial # is 54185 on body and data plate. The markings are not all clear. Can anyone please help me possible identify the markings. They read: ("= not sure areas)
"_ _"OCFSSED IN ACC "W"ITH
"_ _ _ _" 45171880 3/52

Thank you

What does "Processed in accordance with" Mean? Anyone know? Also has anyone ever seen older markings on the underside of the hood?

Over the years dozens of different under hood markings have been used.

When jeeps were winterized each year they often stenciled that fact and listed the temp protected to.

When WWII jeeps were processed IAW appropriate directives for preparation for overseas shipment that would be stenciled under the hood.

When jeeps were processed for declaration of surplus that data was often stenciled under the hood.

You M38 was processed IAW some directive for some purpose at some time in it's life. You may never completely decipher the directive or the purpose.

I noticed you also sent this same question through our administrative mail system. It is best you keep the question process here on these boards where you are more likely to get an answer. The admin mail system is mostly automated web site email traffic.

Thank you, Wes. What does IAW stand for? So, would you say it was fairly common to stencil under the hood even after only one month from the factory? It was built 2/52 and the last stencil notes 3/52. Could some of the numbers be the original hood #? If, so I might try to do some more wet sanding. Thank you!

Man, I'd for sure try and recover your hood numbers!

IAW = In Accordance With

The "Processing" that was done if that soon after delivery would have been either "Processing a newly assigned to unit vehicle" or "Processing a vehicle for shipment" somewhere.

I wouldn't expend a lot of effort and time since these stencils are very localized practices and would only have any value if you were restoring the jeep to be judged as a motor pool jeep assigned to a specific unit at a specific time.

It's not part of a hood number. The Mar 52 hood numbers were in the 20909XXX range.

I would also suggest you download the MVPA's judging guide if you think you are interested in that direction. It will answer 90 % of your judging questions. For abbreviations and acronyms just Google them and you will find out immediately what they stand for.
